Ballycastle 21st August 2016
Our trip to Ballycastle on 21st August with Sean McKay consisted of 6 anglers
Martin Buchanan
Stephen Montgomery
Gerard Girvan
Glenn Murphy
Paddy Trainor
Frankie Montgomery
We started off in search of some fresh Mackerel for bait, which had proven elusive for most of the season, but not this time. After 15 minutes on the first stop we had pulled in enough mackerel for 2 days fishing and headed to the first location.
Here, we found the fishing to be pretty poor with nothing but Dogfish for all the anglers, the biggest of which was around the 2.5lb mark. After about an hour and a half Martin Buchanan hit into something a bit bigger and landed a 11lb 4oz Bull Huss.
We moved to the next mark where Sean had good success with decent Pollock and Cod recently with the chance of Conger or two. The fishing here was better and a few decent Pollock were landed followed by a Bull Huss for Gerard Girvan of about 4.5lb.
Stephen Montgomery then proceeded to land multiple Pollock over 4lb, with the biggest the 5lb on the spinning gear as well as Frankie pulling in a few also. It looked like this was the best we were going to get then Glenn Murphy, who had set himself out for a Conger all day, pulled in his first Conger of 8lb 6oz.
As lines up was called a shout from Glenn and Paddy seen them both reeling up the same fish which proved to be a 17.5lb Conger eel caught on Paddy’s feather trace. The tangle with Glenn surely assisting in actually getting this onto the boat.
All in all, it was a good days fishing with a few decent sized fish after a poor start to the day.
